Youth in Penama Province learn new skills to improve their livelihoods

6 February 2025

Over 80 young people from Penama province enhanced their knowledge and skills through a series of non-accredited workshops delivered by the Australia Pacific Training Coalition (APTC).

In collaboration with provincial authorities, the workshops covered a range of skills training in cookery and pastry, inclusive education, tour guiding, customer service and housekeeping, resilient roofing and basic tiling, and inclusive Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and employment pathways.

In the spirit of Vanuatu’s decentralisation agenda, these provincial workshops aim to promote inclusion and sustainable development in the provinces, contributing to Vanuatu’s broader workforce and economic growth.

This initiative underscores Australia’s commitment to supporting skills development in Vanuatu, strengthening opportunities for communities to improve their livelihoods and to build a more resilient and sustainable future.

Ms Marisan Bigi, a participant in the cookery and pastry skills workshop expressed her enthusiasm and appreciation for the practical and relevant skills she gained.

“This workshop has given me the confidence to take the next step and teach our young generation the new cooking skills I have learned. It will help me start my catering business,” she said.

Similar sentiments were shared by Mr Michael Bule, a participant in the resilient roofing and basic tiling workshop.

“The skills I gained will not only help me secure employment but also enable me to help my community to rebuild after a natural disaster,” he said.

Mr John Tari, the Penama Provincial Education Officer has highlighted the importance of inclusivity in education and training.

“The inclusive education and TVET sessions are critical in ensuring that everyone, regardless of their background or abilities, has access to quality learning opportunities,” he said. “The training will greatly benefit early childhood care and education (ECCE) teachers by equipping them with the skills and knowledge to foster inclusive and supportive learning environments for young children, ensuring that no child is left behind in their educational journey.”

Mr Frederick Tabi, the youth president of Bwatnapni and surrounding villages, also said that these series of workshops are essential for boosting the province’s productivity and creating new opportunities for youth.

Australia remains committed to working closely with partners and communities in Vanuatu to deliver training programs that address local needs and priorities. APTC continues to empower individuals and contribute to developing resilient and sustainable communities in Vanuatu, across the Pacific and Timor-Leste.
