Training Support to the Fiji Sugar Industry project marks Europe Day

02 May 2016

The European Union (EU) funded Training Support to the Fiji Sugar Industry project (2014-2017) is sharing in the celebration of Europe Day which is being held in Suva from 11 to 13 May.

Europe Day is celebrated on 9 May yearly to mark peace and unity in Europe. In Fiji, the EU Delegation for the Pacific has organized a three-day event to showcase the EU's work.

The showcase lets the public learn more about the EU’s regional activities.

Individual EU-funded projects and partners have set up exhibitions to highlight their work and share it with school tours and the general public, as well as providing lunchtime seminars.

The Training Support for the Fiji Sugar Industry project has been funded for four years and resulted from a 2014 agreement of delegated cooperation between the EU and the Australian Government.

The project outcomes align with the EU’s “Support to the Sugarcane Industry Accompanying Measures for Sugar Protocol (AMSP 2013)” program (SSIP).

Under this agreement, the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade engaged the Australia-Pacific Technical College (APTC) to train workers in the Fiji sugar industry.

APTC is an innovative development project funded by the Australian Government. It delivers Australian-standard skills and qualifications for a wide range of vocational careers for skilled workers across the Pacific.

To date, over 700 people have completed training in trades, business and management programs as part of the EU Training Support to the Fiji Sugar Industry project.

The training has been made available to organisations and individuals engaged in the Fiji sugar industry across Fiji.
