Welcome to the APTC

1 January 2022

I welcome you to the Australia Pacific Training Coalition (APTC).

APTC is one of Australia’s significant investments in the region's Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET). We were initially established in 2007 by Pacific Islands Forum Leaders as the Australia-Pacific Technical College and have a strong reputation for training excellence. Since our establishment, we have trained over 17,000 graduates across the region, over 40% of whom are women.

APTC is now in its third phase and is implemented by TAFE Queensland, one of Australia’s largest and most experienced vocational education and training providers. TAFE Queensland offers practical, industry-relevant training to over 125,000 students annually across over 500 program areas, including 1200 Pacific Island Citizens through APTC.  TAFE Queensland (RTO0275) employs over 200 APTC staff across the Pacific and is the Registered Training Organisation providing graduates with Australian Qualifications through APTC.

APTC offers programs from Certificate III to Diploma level in the automotive, engineering, construction, electrical, tourism, hospitality, education, management, and health and community services industry sectors.

APTC has an increasingly catalytic role in supporting TVET system strengthening. We collaborate with TVET institutions and qualifications authorities across the region to create partnerships focused on locally-led reforms that strengthen TVET institutions and systems sustainably. An integral part of strengthening the TVET system is working with our partners to break down inequality and exclusion within the region’s TVET systems.

We aim to contribute to a more skilled, inclusive and productive workforce.

Our purpose is to support national and regional TVET systems in providing quality skills and attributes available to employers that align with labour market requirements.

We value our diversity, having many people in different places doing various things, and we work together as a united team. We honour our connections to each other and respect and celebrate our diversity as our strength.

APTC is committed to incorporating the following priorities across our initiatives to contribute to the region’s prosperity:

  • Gender equity, social inclusion and fair distribution of benefits;
  • Industry engagement and enhanced labour market analysis;
  • Work with Pacific leadership, regional organisations and development partners;
  • Seek to align skills training with significant infrastructure projects; and
  • Support efforts to address climate change and environmental sustainability.

We appreciate that our students are adults who come to APTC with a wealth of experience. All at APTC, our managers, trainers, tutors, and administrative staff, are grateful for the opportunity to share in the learning experience. We encourage all our students to make the most of the training and to develop new networks and professional friendships with others from across the region. APTC has active alumni and chapters in many Pacific Island countries.
