Health and wellbeing workshop for students

Mar 18, 2016

Earlier this month, the Australia-Pacific Technical College (APTC) Fiji campus held a health and wellbeing workshop for its Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) students in Suva.

The workshop, which was held on 17 March, featured guest speakers from the health sector that included general practitioners Dr Kaynaat Ali and Dr Kapil Swamy, dental officer Dr Mehar Ali, dietician Ms Shalveena Jeet and staff nurse Ms Makitalena Marama.

The health professionals provided specific information on children’s health and wellbeing to 24 ECEC students that attended the workshop.

Students got to learn more about illnesses (including allergies, asthma), administering medication to children, hand, oral and dental hygiene, and looking after infants (including immunisation and breastfeeding/bottle feeding). Sun safety, healthy eating and physical activity and developing children’s awareness of safety were also discussed.

APTC’s ECEC trainer, Ms Riyaz Rauf said this workshop was important for ECEC students to help them further their knowledge on providing a safe and healthy learning environment for children.

“Good quality educators provide an environment which enhances children’s learning in a safe and secure environment,” she added.

The ECEC course helps students to develop and facilitate programs in the early childhood sector designed to address the development and learning needs of children up to six years of age.

This semester, APTC is delivering the Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care from its campuses in Fiji, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu. APTC also has campuses in Samoa and Papua New Guinea and offers training to citizens from 14 Pacific Island Forum (PIF) countries.

APTC is an innovative development initiative funded by the Australian Government to deliver training to increase the supply of skilled workers in targeted industry sectors across the Pacific.

APTC is an Australian Government initiative in partnership with the Pacific and Timor-Leste.

APTC is implemented by TAFE Queensland (RTO 0275)
