APTC changed my life

Nov 04, 2013

Naturally talented Nau Dakuiliga zeroed in on Hospitality training because it was in demand. She learnt about the Australia-Pacific Technical College courses while waitressing in Nadi, and knew that the College would be her pathway to success. “My job applications were being rejected because I didn’t have this qualification, she reminisced. So I eagerly applied for Certificate III in Hospitality Operations.”

Upon returning from a triathlon event abroad, she learnt that she had qualified for both the course and a scholarship. Flourishing under the tutelage of APTC Senior Trainer Cathy Joyce, Nau’s development into a confident young woman has been marked by her recent foray into a business career.

After completing the six month Certificate III in Hospitality in July 2013, Nau opened her swimming business, Tortoise Swimming Club where she teaches the young and old to swim.

“Cathy and all the other teachers at the APTC were great. All of them were very helpful, patient and approachable which made studying so easy,” said Nau, adding,“I never knew about the importance of hygiene and a whole range of things in Hospitality but I now have that knowledge”.

“The APTC looks after you from the time you join as a student until you get a job and I’m thankful to them. People wanting to join Hospitality industry should do this course.”

APTC staff also organise fundraisers to support her participation at local and regional meets. She recently won her first medal – a silver in a cycling competition in Papua New Guinea.

In the long term, Nau plans to take up a role in the hospitality industry either in Fiji or abroad.

APTC is an Australian Government initiative in partnership with the Pacific and Timor-Leste.

APTC is implemented by TAFE Queensland (RTO 0275)
