Another semester of hospitality studies has successfully commenced with the Certificate IV in Hospitality (Supervision) and Certificate III in Hospitality (Commercial Cookery) at the Tanoa Rakiraki Hotel campus. This unique facility provides an opportunity for students from all over the South Pacific to study full time in a commercial hotel property.
There are 30 students from Tuvalu, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Samoa and Fiji.
One of the purposes of the APTC is to up skill and empower local hospitality professionals so they may go on and mentor others in the industry.
Caroline Biki from Hohola Youth Development Centre which is part of the TVET Education Department of Papua New Guinea is studying Certificate IV in Hospitality( Supervision) and Wilson Petio Kaea from Tuvalu Maritime Training Institute is studying Certificate III in Hospitality (Commercial Cookery). Caroline and Wilson work as trainers in their respective countries and they are very interested to see how hospitality training is delivered under the Australian Quality Training Framework with the APTC.
Tom Catterall heads up the kitchen delivering the Certificate III in Hospitality (Commercial cookery), where students have a hands-on experience producing food and beverage for their fellow students and guests. As part of the kitchen training the students will be producing a range of menus over their 20 week semester. In the latter half of the semester they will be producing three course formal dinners which will be available to the public once a week.
This semester we have welcomed a new teacher for the Certificate IV Hospitality (Supervision), David Johnson. David was previously in Vanuatu with APTC and brings 30 years experience in the hospitality industry.
