APTC Alumni champion White Ribbon Day in Nauru

Jul 11, 2011

The International Day of Elimination of Violence Against Women is observed in Nauru as 'White Ribbon Day'.

APTC Country Program Coordinator in Nauru, Ms Formosa Halstead, said that the APTC Alumni is one of the groups within the community supporting the White Ribbon campaign.

"The APTC Alumni in Nauru have made a commitment to the elimination of violence against women," explained Ms Halstead.

"The campaign is being led by men within the community, and APTC Alumni member Mr Edward Grundler has been elected as one of the Male Champions for White Ribbon Day."

Mr Grundler has attended White Ribbon Day training programs and joined Human Rights and Women Affairs Officers as a speaker at public awareness campaigns.

Ms Halstead said that Mr Grundler would continue to advocate both to and through the APTC Alumni on gender issues, up to the next White Ribbon Day in November this year.

Ms Halstead reported that a Domestic Violence Team, comprising Women's Affairs Office staff, the Health Department, and the Domestic Violence Unit within the Nauru Police Force, has ensured improvements in raising awareness, reporting, and a sheltering system for domestic violence victims.

APTC is an Australian Government initiative in partnership with the Pacific and Timor-Leste.

APTC is implemented by TAFE Queensland (RTO 0275)
