IMPACT STORY 2021: Leadership training assists senior police officers

Mar 26, 2021

Senior police officers in Vanuatu undertaking leadership and management training offered by APTC have found the opportunity to enhance their ways of working.

The trainings are delivered through a partnership signed last year between APTC and the Pacific Faculty of Policing (PFP).

Under this partnership, several training programs have also been tailored for police officers represented within the Pacific Islands Chiefs of Police.

Vanuatu Police Force media team member, Sgt. Jane Borenga, who attended the training, found it helpful, particularly in her role as supervisor.

“It has helped me change the way how I do things at work, change the way I prioritise my plans and plan effectively to achieve my goals. Even though it is a challenge to have assignments while trying to carry out official duties, I enjoy it and look forward to achieving my goal at the end of this course,” she said.

Port Vila Station Operations Officer, Sgt. Terry Malampa said the training had set a new standard for him in terms of knowledge.

“I am personally challenged and at the same time motivated to carry on and not give up so easily. This course has raised the level of my knowledge and, I feel more confident in my work,” he said.

Under the partnership, APTC delivers the Certificate IV in Leadership and Management (BSB42015) to Police in Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Kiribati, Nauru, Tonga and Tuvalu.

The program delivery commenced in October 2020 and will continue via virtual and face-to-face modes until June 2022.

The Pacific Faculty of Policing is a joint initiative of the Australian Federal Police and the Australian Institute of Police Management, designed and implemented to provide police leadership development opportunities across the Pacific region.

APTC is managed by TAFE Queensland (RTO 0275).

APTC is an Australian Government initiative in partnership with the Pacific and Timor-Leste.
