APTC and KIT plan joint TVET priorities

Feb 09, 2021

A planning workshop recently organised between the Australia Pacific Training Coalition (APTC) and Kiribati Institute of Technology (KIT) focused on revisiting shared objectives and identifying capability development priorities for staff and students for 2021.

APTC and KIT’s longstanding collaboration began in 2008, followed by a Letter of Agreement in 2012 and many partnership milestones since, including the signing of the renewed partnership in October 2020 to June 2022.

The interactive workshop was held at KIT on Thursday 4 February and outlined key activities and opportunities for APTC and KIT to collaborate on for the coming year. These include professional development for KIT trainers and staff, building pathways from KIT to APTC so that i-Kiribati have greater access to training opportunities and improving employment outcomes for Kiribati students. The discussions were facilitated by APTC’s incoming Country Liaison and Engagement Coordinator in Kiribati, Birati Titon, and supported by APTC’s Partnership and Coalition Officer, George Pitakoe.

The partners expressed their intention to continue the fruitful collaboration and focus on strengthening quality TVET delivery in Kiribati.

In her opening remarks on behalf of the Ministry of Employment and Human Resource, the KIT Officer-in-Charge and Deputy Director for Quality, Bannau Tiiata, acknowledged Australia’s ongoing support for TVET in Kiribati.

She added that the partnership between both governments ensures improved access to quality technical and vocational education and training (TVET), and strengthens key education institutions in Kiribati, such as KIT.

The Australian Government, through APTC and the Kiribati Facility, supports the KIT – a key vocational training provider in Kiribati, to deliver enhanced training and practical learning opportunities to students.

Ms Tiiata said the informative and valuable workshop gave both APTC and KIT an opportunity to plan, discuss and revisit partnership principles and activities to ensure both organisations are on the same page.

She commended the innovative use of technology in the workshop to foster conversations with stakeholders from and around the Pacific, despite COVID-19 impacts on travel.

APTC Country Director for Solomon Islands and Kiribati, Abigail Chang, acknowledged the Ministry of Employment and Human Resources Development, the Australian High Commission in Kiribati, Kiribati Facility and KIT for the fruitful planning day, and is excited for the joint priorities identified for this year.

APTC is Australia’s flagship TVET investment in the Pacific that has trained over 15,000 Pacific women and men, including more than 600 i-Kiribati students obtaining Australian qualifications in various courses in the last 13 years.

APTC is an Australian Government initiative in partnership with the Pacific and Timor-Leste.

APTC is implemented by TAFE Queensland (RTO 0275)
