Stakeholders discuss Fijian skills and employment prospects

Jan 25, 2021

Skill shortages, work ready skills, impacts of COVID-19 on local and regional labour markets, gender equality and social inclusion were some of the topics of discussion emerging from APTC’s Fiji Labour Market Analysis Report roundtable in Suva on Friday 13 November.

The roundtable was hosted by the Australia Pacific Training Coalition’s (APTC) Fiji and Tuvalu Country Office, bringing together key stakeholders to discuss findings of the Fiji Labour Market Analysis Report and to provide feedback on the report’s recommendations. Stakeholders at the gathering included government representatives, educational institutes, industry partners, local, regional and international organisations and development partners.

To promote the value of TVET in line with Pacific government priorities and labour market demands, APTC has worked with partners on a Pacific Labour Market Analysis.

This Report evaluated national and trans-Pacific employment trends, including current and future skills shortages at local, regional and global levels, as well as regional labour mobility opportunities.

APTC’s Fiji Labour Market Analysis Report focuses on the labour market and job prospects in the national and trans-Pacific labour markets, informed by in-country consultations across government, private sector TVET providers and development partners.

Together with the Fiji Labour Market Analysis, the overall Pacific Labour Market Analysis Regional Report – covering all nine Pacific countries that APTC operates in – includes an assessment of the ongoing impacts of COVID-19 on Pacific labour markets.

APTC Chief Executive Officer, Soli Middleby, encouraged Fiji TVET stakeholders to collaborate on promoting courses and programs available to young people, as well as the importance of TVET, in line with rewarding employment prospects for Fijians, with the help of the Fijian Government, employers and secondary schools.

Ms Middleby also acknowledged the importance of gender equality and social inclusion as being integral to the recommendations of the Labour Market Analysis report.

The APTC Fiji Country Office will now work on incorporating reflections from today’s discussions into the finalisation of Fiji Labour Market Analysis Report before it is officially launched.

APTC is an Australian Government initiative in partnership with the Pacific and Timor-Leste.

APTC is implemented by TAFE Queensland (RTO 0275)
