Career growth achieved through TVET skills training

Written by APTC Media | 3 March 2021

Australia Pacific Training Coalition (APTC) graduate, Boaz Watasa, has secured his dream promotion and is thriving in his new supervisory role at SolTuna Limited in the Solomon Islands.

Through a combination of hard work and skills training, Boaz is now the supervisor for the Property Department at the company, where he started work in the plumbing section in 2003.

While he supported staff within the plumbing section, it was evident that skills training could help him deliver better outputs and progress in his career path.

With hands-on industry experience, skills and dedication, Boaz completed Certificate III in Plumbing (CPC32413) at APTC in Samoa and graduated in 2018.

“Thanks to my training with APTC, it boosted my confidence in the trade area. I now communicate clearly with my co-workers, understand and implement regulations impacting work areas, engage successfully in work planning and contribute positively to the delivery of quality work outputs across the plumbing, carpentry and electrical sections,” Boaz explained.

“The APTC course I undertook emphasised quality work, and that was my turning point. It helped me to understand the importance of quality in work processes and output. For example, my work is consistently neat, and I seriously consider health and safety implications.”

His TVET experience broadened Boaz’s thinking with the strength and foresight to overcome challenges associated with his responsibilities.

He is also excited to see broader changes happen for himself, his community and SolTuna, where he is able to meet his family’s needs, his professional aspirations and the company’s expectation.

Boaz attributed his achievements to his personal motto, “work smart”, which motivated him through thin and thick, enabling him to remain focused on his responsibilities.

As an APTC alumnus, he encouraged more Solomon Islanders to enroll in APTC courses and to consider TVET as an option for career growth.

“If given the opportunity from APTC, please prioritise your studies and do not engage in activities that will have a negative impact on your studies,” Boaz advised.

Currently 25 APTC alumni are working with SolTuna Ltd in Solomon Islands.

APTC is managed by TAFE Queensland (RTO 0275).
