The Mount Hagen Technical College (MHTC) in Papua New Guinea recently marked a significant achievement with the grand unveiling of its newly renovated kitchen facility.
This state-of-the-art facility was made possible through the generous support of the Australian Government through its major Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) provider, the Australia Pacific Training Coalition (APTC). The new kitchen offers students the advanced training they need to succeed in the rapidly growing tourism and hospitality industry.
The unveiling ceremony was officiated by the Counsellor – Education and Leadership at the Australian High Commission Laura Marson, First Secretary of Economics Tristan Obrien, and witnessed by MHTC Principal Kom Daii, Deputy Principal Michael Sapau, and APTC’s PNG Executive Country Director, Renée Archer.
Ms Marson emphasised the significance of the project, stating, “A proper learning facility is crucial in creating a safe and secure environment for students to thrive. Improving educational infrastructure is an important endeavour, and the Australian Government is pleased to contribute to this crucial cause through the establishment of this kitchen facility,” she said.
Mr Daii expressed gratitude to the Australian Government and APTC for their support, further acknowledging the timely assistance in completing and launching the kitchen upgrade project.
“Our tourism and hospitality program required a good kitchen facility, and this support has come at the right time. We express our deepest gratitude to the Australian Government and APTC for their generous provision of the kitchen facility and essential equipment.”
Mr Daii reiterated the significant benefits of the longstanding partnership with APTC which has boosted MHTC’s ability to provide high quality training to its students.
“Our collaboration with APTC has resulted in significant infrastructural upgrades that have directly benefited both our trainers and students.
“These facilities have enhanced student learning and improved the way trainers deliver their programs. We are eager to maintain this successful partnership and continue propelling progress in technical and vocational education across our communities in PNG,” Mr Daii added.
The kitchen is furnished with advanced equipment, including gas stoves, freezers, deep fryers, dishwashers, and a rangehood. It will serve as a practical learning space for the College’s tourism and hospitality students and trainers, facilitating hands-on experiences.
“This improved infrastructure signifies a significant step forward for MHTC and the future of PNG’s tourism workforce. Our graduates will emerge with the necessary skills and practical experience to excel in the hospitality sector, propelling the growth and success of PNG’s tourism industry,” Mr Daii further added.
