APTC works with International Needs Fiji to enhance digital literacy skills for women

Written by APTC Media | 24 May 2022

The Australia Pacific Training Coalition (APTC) collaborated with International Needs Fiji to improve the digital literacy skills of 20 women for better employment prospects.

The participants completed the Digital Literacy Essentials (MC00013) micro-credential course, which helped them keep current with modern digital technologies and internet use. Most of the women were unemployed and single mothers, and are aspiring to start small businesses to support their livelihoods.

Executive Director for International Needs Fiji, Tomu Raiviu, thanked APTC for partnering with them to deliver skills that can help open new opportunities for women.

“Our goal is to transform lives and change communities. Most of our engagements are in rural communities and settlements. Working with APTC has enabled us to provide much-needed training to more women that improves and sustains their livelihoods,” he added.

APTC is Australia’s flagship technical and vocational education and training (TVET) program in the Pacific and Timor-Leste, contributing to a more skilled, inclusive and productive workforce for the region.

APTC Skills for Employment and Training Director, Tim Harbison, said the targeted approach in working with International Needs Fiji to deliver the training helps APTC ensure inclusive educational outcomes.

“We believe that equal access to education and skills for women is essential to the health and social development of families, communities, and society as a whole,” he continued.

Participant Sereima Lebanimara found the training to be beneficial and relevant.

“I run a home-based screen-printing, tie-dye and pastry business, which is an important source of livelihood for my family. The training taught me how to use the internet effectively so I can better promote my business on social media,” she added.

The micro-credential course was delivered over two days as part of a four-day training program that included jewellery-making and financial literacy sessions.

Micro-credentials are short and highly-targeted non-accredited online courses designed to help learners improve a skill in an industry area. To learn more about these courses, visit Micro-Credentials (aptc.edu.au).
