More than 20 Nauru students graduate from APTC

Feb 09, 2018

The latest batch of graduates from the Australia-Pacific Technical College (APTC) graduated from their courses on 6 February 2018 in a ceremony held at Centennial Hall, Nauru.

A total of 21 Nauru nationals graduated with qualifications in six different programs from APTC – a flagship program of the Australian Government.

Since 2007, APTC has delivered courses providing Australian-standard skills and qualifications across a wide range of vocational careers, for skilled workers across the Pacific. During this time, APTC has trained over 12,000 graduates, including more than 100 Nauruan nationals.

The new graduates undertook studies in Carpentry, Fabrication, Fitting and Machining, Individual Support, Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology and Community Services.  This graduation recognises the new skills and knowledge that each of the graduands can now use in serving their employers, families, communities and country.

His Excellency Baron Waqa, President of the Republic of Nauru, delivered the keynote address at the graduation ceremony, commending APTC for the standard of learning resources and teachers employed in the program, which he felt ensured that students had a high quality learning experience.

“Through APTC, the Australian Government is helping make a lasting contribution to the development of the Pacific region and for small islands states like Nauru,” he added.

The President applauded the 14 female graduates, and said, it was “inspiring” to see more women taking up the challenge to pursue further studies, which was in line with the Government’s goal to advance and improve the quality of women’s lives in Nauru.

In her closing remarks, Australia High Commissioner to Nauru, Her Excellency, Ms Angela Tierney, said that the graduates were Nauru’s next generation of leaders and that each represented an important page in the next chapter of Nauru’s development.

Among the graduands was the first cohort of 16 students from APTC’s Certificate IV in Community Services program. The program was introduced in March 2017 for Nauru government workers who work with vulnerable and disadvantaged people across communities in Nauru.

The ceremony was the first APTC graduation for 2018, and was attended by families and friends of graduates and government and industry representatives.

APTC is an Australian Government initiative in partnership with the Pacific and Timor-Leste.
