Tourism Students learn to fly at the Bauerfield International Airport, Port Vila

May 31, 2013

The Certificate III in Tourism students at APTC Vanuatu participated in a familiarisation trip to Bauerfield Airport Port Vila as part of their training program at APTC.

A staff named Pascal from Airports Vanuatu Ltd (AVL) warmly welcomed them. He had a talk with the students in the VIP lounge on the structure and role of AVL. They then were led to the Fire Department where they learnt about the emergency procedures at the airport. These included learning the job requirements of the “firies” and being shown the features of the fire trucks followed by a demonstration of the fire fighting equipment.

The next visit to the air traffic control tower was next where they listened to various pilots talking to the control officer and were given a bird’s eye view of an actual aircraft landing procedure from the control tower The students were then boarded an Air Vanuatu aircraft that had just landed from Brisbane Australia. Some lucky students even sat in Business Class!

Familiarisation trips like these offer students to opportunity to experience different tourism products, update their tourism industry knowledge and to see the many different job roles in tourism and associated industries.

APTC is an Australian Government initiative in partnership with the Pacific and Timor-Leste.
